At its core, "influencing" involves impacting the choices of others through social and digital platforms. Thought leadership, however, is about pioneering ideas and sharing innovative insights within a specific industry or area of expertise. Thought leaders are revered for their depth of knowledge, foresight, and ability to inspire change or progress through their intellectual contributions. They don't just follow trends; they set the agenda for their field.

Content Focus and Purpose:

• Influencers: Their content is often centered around personal lifestyle, products, and services, aiming to engage and entertain while subtly (or overtly) promoting brands or products. 
• Thought Leaders: Their content delves into industry insights, trends, challenges, and solutions, focusing on educating and providing value to the audience.

Engagement and Influence:

•  Influencers: Influence is measured by their ability to drive sales, brand awareness, and engagement metrics such as likes, shares, and comments.
•  Thought Leaders: Influence is gauged by the impact of their ideas on their industry, often leading to speaking engagements, publications, and recognition among peers. 

Monetization Strategies:

• Influencers: These creators often monetize their personal brand through sponsorships, brand deals, and affiliate marketing.
• Thought Leaders: These experts monetize their brand through consulting, speaking fees, book sales, and sometimes by leading businesses or organizations in their field. 

Real-Life Examples

Influencers:

• Kylie Jenner: A quintessential example of an influencer (as are all Kardashian/Jenners), Kylie leverages her massive following to promote beauty products, fashion, and more. Her influence is primarily based on her personal brand and lifestyle. 
• Jay Shetty: Initially gaining fame for his viral wisdom videos that blend life lessons with storytelling, Jay has effectively leveraged his influence to promote mindfulness, motivation, and personal growth.

Thought Leaders:

• Michio Kaku: He's a theoretical physicist known for his work in string theory and his ability to popularize science among the general public. Kaku has authored several books and appears regularly on TV and radio, making complex scientific ideas accessible and fascinating to a wide audience.
• Brene Brown: A researcher and storyteller, Brene has fundamentally altered our understanding of vulnerability, courage, and empathy. Her work extends far beyond her academic audience to impact a global community of leaders and individuals seeking personal growth.

While influencers might inspire you to purchase a new product, thought leaders challenge you to rethink your perceptions and approaches within your professional and personal life.

Longevity

A key point of divergence lies in their longevity and depth of impact. Influencers can see rapid changes in their followings and influence based on social media trends and personal life changes.

Thought leaders, conversely, often build their reputations over years or even decades, with their ideas potentially outliving their active careers.

Furthermore, while influencers tend to operate on a broad array of platforms to maximize their reach and engagement, thought leaders may choose more specialized forums and platforms like professional networks, academic publications, or conferences (like TED) to disseminate their ideas.

 A key point: Whether you aim for influencership or thought leadership, my advice is that you start with one platform. It will be easier to manage and can lead to faster growth than straddling multiple platforms at once.
