Want to Get Mentioned by AI? A Guide to Creating a Newsletter that Builds Authority and Leads Buyers to You

Want to win attention and authority in today’s ever-evolving landscape of social media and AI? Consider long-form content. This week, I’m breaking down exactly how and why to deploy this to own your industry and turn expertise into influence.

Why is long-form more crucial than ever (even with “short attention spans”)?

It’s easier than ever to falsely believe that in 2025, attention has completely disappeared. But that’s not quite right. It just got choosier. Decision-makers are still hungry for substance that helps them make calls, align teams, and de-risk moves. In fact, Edelman + LinkedIn’s latest B2B Thought Leadership Impact work shows high-quality thought leadership opens doors “where ads fall short,” especially with “hidden influencers” who drive consensus behind the scenes. (Think corporate decision-making committees, where perhaps your tech department isn’t the primary buyer, but is still assessing and providing an opinion around a marketing tool as they have to deal with troubleshooting it.)

In these complex decisions, long-form is the only format with enough real estate to show your method, evidence, and judgment—all signals buyers use to separate category experts from parrots. (Source: Edelman)

And audiences will stick with you when the extra words add extra value. Chartbeat’s research finds average engaged time rises with word count up to ~2,000–4,000 words (!!!). Indeed, you have permission to go deeper when the depth is doing work. That matters in complex B2B decisions, where nuance beats novelty.

Still not convinced long-form is here in a major way? We need only look at Substack’s surge. The platform crossed roughly 5 million paid subscriptions in early 2025, buoyed by an influx of veteran journalists and niche experts.

The translation? Long-form isn’t a niche; it’s a mainstream behavior that’s finding new delivery vehicles when the voice is trusted and the value is real. (Financial Times)

“Depth ≠ length. It’s density of value.”

Why are LinkedIn Newsletters one of the best long-form options?

LinkedIn’s algorithm is already optimizing for expertise over engagement bait (as stated by LinkedIn themselves, they look at content that clearly shows “knowledge and advice”). Platform explainers and industry roundups keep repeating the same guidance: share credible professional advice, grounded in experience and relevance to your community.

That’s a tailwind for long-form formats like newsletters that package an argument, not just a hot take. (Hootsuite)

The economics of LinkedIn newsletters also work in your favor as a creator. Supply still lags demand. While estimates vary, multiple trackers point to tens of thousands of newsletters active on LinkedIn—meaning there’s volume, but the surface area is tiny compared to 1B+ members and hundreds of millions active monthly. For well-defined niches, it’s still easier to stand out here than in the open web’s ocean. (StraightIn)

Critically, LinkedIn also upgraded newsletter analytics in February 2025 to include email sends and open rates, alongside views and new subscribers. For creators, that means tying your newsletter directly to sales. Pair each issue with an article on your site, and LinkedIn becomes a huge traffic source that accelerates email growth. Why do LinkedIn Newsletters matter in an AI-centered SEO world?

Generative answer engines (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT with browsing, Perplexity) prefer sources that are comprehensive, recent, and credible. Long-form that fully resolves a user question is more likely to be excerpted or cited.

Studies tracking AI Overviews and other platforms show they lean toward authoritative, well-structured pages—your LinkedIn newsletter can be the on-ramp, and your website can be the definitive destination those systems link to (I always include links to my site for longer breakdowns).

Finally, AI has increased the volume of competent, generic posts, which raises the premium on original data, specific frameworks, and human judgment. LinkedIn’s algorithm favors exactly those signals of expertise. That’s why a substantive newsletter is a durable advantage in the AI era. (Hootsuite)

How should you structure a LinkedIn Newsletter to impact AI-centered SEO?

  1. Start with the definitive version on your website. Publish the full, source-rich article on your site first. Then create a “LinkedIn lighter” version as an executive summary with clear links back to sections of the definitive post. AI features tend to cite pages that already rank and read like authoritative resources. Your site gives you control over schema, internal links, and speed.

  2. Use question-shaped subheadlines. Frame subheads around natural queries buyers type and leaders forward internally (e.g., “How should a CFO measure AI ROI in year one?”). You’ll notice I do that in this article. Generative engines and humans both benefit from explicit question/answer structure.

  3. Show credibility signals (Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trust) that Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines look for. Add a two-sentence byline with credibility signals (role, years in domain, notable projects), cite external sources, and include first-party data from your client work or surveys. Refresh timestamps when you update. These cues improve your odds of being referenced in AI answers and increase trust with skeptical readers.

  4. Consider delivering one “proof asset” in your LinkedIn newsletter. Give readers something forwardable: a mini-dataset, decision checklist, teardown, or cost model. These artifacts travel inside buying groups and show up in AI answers more readily than vague opinion pieces. Long-form earns the time if each section adds concrete value.

TLDR

If you want a thought-leadership engine that also converts, a LinkedIn Newsletter is one of the most leverage-rich plays for 2026. It rides a platform tuned for expertise, gives you email-quality metrics to defend the investment, funnels readers to the definitive version on your website and your list, and increases your chances of being chosen—by both buyers and bots—when it counts.
